Self-Care Routine Ideas: The Products and Rituals I Swear By
I am sure we have all at some point seen those beautiful, aesthetic self-care routines on social media and thought I need to add that. The candles. The journaling. The perfectly organized bathroom shelves. And while those look beautiful, I think the reality is that most of us just need something simple that works for us and that we can fit into our lives. Something that helps us transition from the chaos of the day into a calmer state of mind without it feeling like another thing on the to-do list. Whatever that is.
So I wanted to share my self-care routine ideas and the things I swear by. The products I genuinely love, the rituals that help me unwind, and the small habits that have made the biggest difference. I am still finding and adding new things and new habits, and also leaving behind some that do not align with me anymore. That is part of the process.
Building a self-care routine changed a lot for me. Not because I suddenly became this zen, candle-lighting, meditating person every night. But because I created a few simple habits that signal to my brain and my body that the day is done. And that shift, even though it sounds small, has made a real difference in how I sleep, how my skin looks, and honestly, how I feel.
Take what works for you and leave the rest. There is no one-size-fits-all here. The point is to give you inspiration, not a book full of things you should incorporate. And remember, adding everything at once will most likely result in you doing none of them in a couple of weeks.
Phone Free Morning
My phone goes on silent mode for the night, and it stays on silent until 9 AM. That means my first hour is completely phone free. No emails, no notifications, no Instagram, no scrolling. Just me time.
During that hour, I usually make my tea or a warm water with lemon, ginger, and chia seeds. I stand on my vibrating plate for ten minutes while stretching. Some mornings I go to a yoga class. I journal, take my dog for a walk, and then make my breakfast. Only when I feel ready for the day do I open my phone and switch into work mode.
It is a small change but it makes a real difference. When you start your day on your own terms instead of immediately reacting to whatever your phone throws at you, the whole day feels calmer. Try it for a week and see how it feels.
Journaling: Training Your Brain to Think Differently
Speaking of journaling, this has become a really important part of my self-care.
I use the Five Minute Journal by Intelligent Change, and I love the simplicity of it. In the morning, you write down what you are grateful for, what would make today great, and your daily intentions. Before bed, you reflect on how the day went and what you learned.
The idea is that you start and end your day with intention and gratitude. I know that sounds a bit fluffy, but hear me out. Most of us have a tendency to think negatively about almost everything. Our brains are actually wired that way. It is called the negativity bias, and research suggests that the majority of our daily thoughts lean towards the negative. If you want to shift that, you have to actively train your brain. And writing down what you are grateful for, even when it is something as simple as having a roof over your head or a warm bed, is one of the easiest ways to start doing that.
I think a lot of us quit journaling because we feel like we do not have anything meaningful to write. But it really can be that simple. After a while, I started noticing a genuine shift in my mindset. It does not happen overnight, but it happens.
I also keep a beautiful journal alongside it for longer thoughts, ideas, and reflections. If you are going to write in something every day, I think it should feel nice to hold and look at.

Dry Brushing: Two Minutes That Change How Your Skin Feels
I love dry brushing. It is one of those self-care steps that takes almost no time but makes you feel like you just had a spa treatment.
Dry brushing is exactly what it sounds like. You take a natural bristle brush on dry skin before showering and use gentle, sweeping strokes toward your heart. It boosts circulation, helps with lymphatic drainage, and honestly your skin just feels incredible afterward. Your body lotion absorbs so much better too.
It takes about two minutes. That is it. Two minutes for skin that feels smoother and more alive. If you have never tried it, I really think you should.

Shower Routine
A good shower gel can turn an ordinary shower into something that genuinely feels luxurious. And lately, I am obsessed with the Korres Yoghurt Shower Gel. The feeling it leaves on my skin is so soft and clean, and the smell is honestly heaven. Fresh, soft, mild, clean. I cannot describe it any other way.
I have noticed that this specific fragrance is sometimes impossible to find anywhere, so when I found it again recently, I had to restock three of them. Just in case, you know, the world would go under. A girl needs her shower gel.
But then, as always, Rituals shower foams are also a must have for me. Lately I am obsessed with their Amsterdam Collection, which was created in partnership with the famous Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. The fragrance is a beautiful mix of Dutch tulips and Japanese yuzu, and it is just one of those scents that immediately makes you feel calm and luxurious. But the one that never disappoints, no matter what, is their Sakura fragrance. If you have not tried it, you need to.

Body Lotion: My Biggest Obsession (And I Mean That)
I need to talk about body lotion because this is genuinely my biggest obsession.
I use body lotion every single time after showering. It is one of my absolute non-negotiables. And I buy body lotions like bread. I seriously have a stock of them at home under my bed to be specific like I was preparing for the world to end. At least I would have a hydrated body, right?
I will be honest, I am not as obsessive about the ingredient lists of my body lotions as I am with my facial skincare. I buy them more freely and more often because for me, body lotion is about the feeling and the fragrance just as much as the hydration.
My absolute favorite, the one I always need to have at least one bottle of, is the Clarins Moisture Rich Body Lotion. It smells just perfectly enough. Not over-fragranced, just clean and lovely. The texture is beautiful and it keeps my skin hydrated all day.
Another one I love is the L’Occitane Almond Body Milk. Love love love. The almond scent is so comforting and the formula is rich without being heavy.
And then of course, Rituals. The consistency of their body creams, the fragrances, and the price point. It all just works. It gives that luxurious feeling without breaking the bank.

Face Masks: My Weekly (daily) Treat
I use face masks a lot, and I love trying different kinds depending on what my skin needs.
Lately, I have been obsessed with sheet masks and hydrogel masks. Hydrogel masks are the ones you can leave on overnight, so you literally wake up with hydrated, glowy skin. There is something about putting one on and just laying down that feels so indulgent. It is a forced pause, and sometimes that is exactly what I need.
I also love a good cream mask. The last one I tried was the Beauty of Joseon Glow Mask. I will be honest, the smell is not the nicest. But the feeling my skin had afterward was amazing. It looked and felt so hydrated and glowy.
For my luxury evenings, I love the Chanel Camellia Face Mask. It is also a cream mask and it really calms my face in a way that I have not experienced with many other masks. Is it pricey? Yes. Is it worth it for those special self-care nights? Absolutely.
And then there is the Medicube Wrapping Mask, which I actually wear every single night. It has become such a staple that it does not even feel like a mask anymore, it is just part of my routine at this point.
But you do not need to spend a lot to enjoy a good face mask. There are beautiful options at every price point. The point is just to give your skin and yourself that little extra love.

Hair Care Treatments
Once a week, or every two weeks, I do a proper hair treatment. Here is how I do it.
I start by wetting my hair and applying my scalp treatment directly onto the scalp. Right now I am using the Moroccanoil Scalp Treatment. I gently massage it in for a couple of minutes to really work it into the scalp. Rinse. Then I move on to shampooing, and I always double shampoo. The first wash removes the buildup, and the second one actually cleans.
After shampooing, I apply my hair mask and leave it on for about five to ten minutes. Lately I have been using the Gisou Honey Hair Mask and it makes my hair so smooth, soft, and shiny. I am absolutely in love with it. During the waiting time, I usually take care of other things like a gentle body exfoliation or shaving. Then I rinse out the mask and finish with conditioner.
It sounds like a lot of steps, but once you get into the rhythm it becomes second nature. And the difference in how your hair feels afterward is so worth it.

Loungewear and Pyjamas
This might sound silly, but hear me out. I feel immediately more myself when I am wearing a beautiful, soft, and comfortable pyjama or matching lounge set. If I could wear loungewear all day every day, I would. I am also completely obsessed with matching cashmere sets. There is just something about wearing something that feels luxurious against your skin, even when you are just at home doing nothing.
A brand that I am completely head over heels obsessed with is The Nap Co. Their pyjamas are so soft and beautiful. It feels like you are wearing nothing, but at the same time you somehow feel luxurious. I do not know how they do it, but they do.
A Cup or two of Green Tea
I am a big green tea person. It is funny because I do not drink any other tea at all, but green tea I swear by. I can imagine it is a similar feeling to when someone swears by their morning coffee. Fun fact, I have never tried coffee in my life. So green tea is my holy grail. It has become part of my self-care ritual and something I genuinely look forward to every day. It sounds so simple but sometimes the simplest things are the ones that matter the most.
Skincare: Obviously
Do I even need to mention this? My self-care routine obviously includes a full skincare routine. That is a given.
But the difference between rushing through it and actually being present while doing it is everything. When I treat my skincare as a ritual instead of a chore, it becomes the most calming part of my evening. Taking my time with each step, paying attention to how the products feel, doing a little face massage while applying my moisturizer. It is my time, and I protect it.
Your Environment
Your environment plays a big role in relaxation.
I have been working hard to create my home into a calming, safe space. Neutral tones, minimalistic, and good quality in everything. From a 100% wool rug to soft lighting. When you walk into a space that feels intentionally calm, it is so much easier to actually wind down.
Dim the lights. Bright overhead lights keep your brain in awake mode. Switch to softer lighting, a bedside lamp, fairy lights, or even candles if you are into that. The shift in lighting alone tells your brain that it is time to slow down.
Temperature matters too. A slightly cooler room is better for sleep. I always open my window before going to sleep, no matter what time of the year it is. Even when it is minus 20 outside. Fresh air before bed just makes me sleep so much better.
And bed sheets. This is another one of my weaknesses. I need my bed sheets to be either 100% cotton or percale. There is just a difference in how it feels against your skin. And changing them every week is a must for me. Sleeping in fresh, clean sheets is honestly one of the best feelings in the world and it is also better for your skin.

Falling Asleep to Affirmations
One thing that has really helped me fall asleep is listening to affirmations. I put on a playlist as I get into bed and let it play while I drift off. It gives my brain something calm and positive to focus on instead of starting to run through everything I need to do the next day. If you are the type who lies in bed overthinking, this might be worth trying. I have linked the exact playlist I currently listen to here so you can try it yourself.

What Self-Care Is Not
I want to address something that I think gets lost in the self-care conversation.
Self-care is not about spending money. You do not need expensive products, candles, or bath bombs to take care of yourself. A warm shower, clean sheets, and ten minutes of quiet is self-care. Saying no to plans when you are exhausted is self-care. Going to bed early instead of scrolling for another hour is self-care.
Self-care is also not selfish. I used to feel guilty about taking time for myself in the evening. Like I should be doing something more productive. But I have learned that taking care of yourself is what allows you to show up for everything else. Your evening routine is how you refill your own cup so you actually have something to give.
And self-care does not need to look aesthetic or Instagram-worthy. Some nights my self-care routine is ten minutes of skincare and collapsing into bed. And that is completely valid.
Building Your Own Self-Care Menu
Here is what I would suggest if you want to start building your own self-care routine.
Start with just one or two things. Maybe it is putting your phone away at a certain time and doing your skincare properly. That is enough to start.
Do it at the same time for at least two weeks. It takes a while for something to feel natural, so give it time before you decide it is not working.
Add things gradually. Once the basics feel automatic, you can add face masks, dry brushing, journaling, or whatever else appeals to you. But build the foundation first.
Do not compare your routine to what you see online. Some of us have elaborate ninety-minute evening rituals with ten steps. That is great for them, but it does not mean you need the same thing. A fifteen-minute routine that you actually do every night is worth more than a two-hour routine you do once a month.
And give yourself grace on the nights when it does not happen. Life gets in the way sometimes. You stay out late. You fall asleep on the couch. You just do not feel like it. That is okay. The routine will be there tomorrow.
Conclusion
Self-care does not need to be complicated, aesthetic, or time-consuming. It just needs to be yours. Something that helps you close the chapter on the day, take care of your skin, and ease into rest.
The biggest shift for me was realizing that my evenings were not just leftover time after the day was done. They are an intentional part of taking care of myself. And once I started treating them that way, everything from my sleep to my skin to my overall mood got better.
Start small. Be consistent. And treat your evenings like they matter, because they really do.
